Numeracy across the curriculum

The Leicestershire Numeracy Team use write that teachers of mathematics should:
  1. be aware of the mathematical techniques used in other subjects and provide assistance and advice to other departments, so that a correct and consistent approach is used in all subjects.
  2. provide information to other subject teachers on appropriate expectations of students and difficulties likely to be experienced in various age and ability groups.
  3. through liaison with other teachers, attempt to ensure that students have appropriate numeracy skills by the time they are needed for work in other subject areas.
  4. seek opportunities to use topics and examination questions from other subjects in mathematics lessons.

Additionally they add that teachers of other subjects should:
  1. ensure that they are familiar with correct mathematical language, notation, conventions and techniques, relating to their own subject, and encourage students to use these correctly.
  2. be aware of appropriate expectations of students and difficulties that might be experienced with numeracy skills.
  3. provide information for mathematics teachers on the stage at which specific numeracy skills will be required for particular groups.
  4. provide resources for mathematics teachers to enable them to use examples of applications of numeracy relating to other subjects in mathematics lessons.

Task 1:

Subjects teachers could use this old National Strategies document to help them identify elements of mathematics that may arise in their subject ares. Download this document and then edit it to suit your particular subject. This could form the first stages in a numeracy policy for each department.

Here is an example one that has been reduced for Religious Studies to include only those mathematics objective that are relevant:

Task 2:

Upload your document to the relevant subject page or e-mail me with it.

Task 3:

Complete one of the four activities that is relevant to you, your position, and your subject:
  1. Develop a specific numeracy resource that you can use in your lesson over the next half term and share with your faculty. Use this wikispace and the numeracy document you created for some ideas;
  2. Match what you have just created (subject specific numeracy document) with your SoW. Do they students have the mathematical capabilities to complete you task? Do you need to modify anything?
  3. Look at the mathematics skills documents below to research the mathematical methods your students are likely to encounter in their mathematics lessons. Are they familiar to you? Do you need to modify the way you approach that subject?
  4. Help with the NCETM document bid proposal by contributing to this document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12a5deRUJk0s7VV40Lrj4eXEbxvsxL-zUPZ6IoWlYQLI/edit?usp=sharing

Mathematic techniques

These 3 documents contain some excellent explanations for commonly met mathematical content and techniques:

For summaries of these documents and further explanations, see the dedicated pages for important subject content:

Now have a look around the wikispace and please edit some pages and add your ideas.

Action Plan

Go to this Google Document and update the details of what you are doing:

Session Evaluation

Go to http://m.socrative.com/student/#joinRoom and use Room Number 462220 to evaluate the session. (this can also be done from your phone). Thank you!
